Higher open on strong earnings

Strong earnings news lifted the markets to a higher open with the Dow climbing 73 points to 23,346. Nasdaq gained 12 points to 6,598.


On the upside


Graphic Packaging Holding (NYSE: GPK) will merge with International Paper's North America consumer packaging business.


Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) reported sharply higher third quarter earnings and revenue that beat analyst expectations and lifted its full year forecast.


Third quarter earnings surged for Corning (NYSE: GLW) to beat expectations.

On the downside


Ionis Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: IONS) will host a live webcast on Tuesday, November 7 to discuss its third quarter results.


Sears (Nasdaq: SHLD) will stop selling Whirlpool (NYSE: WHR) products.


Biogen (Nasdaq: BIIB) reported higher third quarter earnings and revenue but sales of Spinraza disappointed.


In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of more than 4 to 3 on both the NYSE and on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 rose 4 points to 2,568. Bitcoin plummeted $240 to $5,655.
